On June 21-24, 2023, the International Hepatology Congress EASL 2023 was held in Vienna (Republic of Austria).
6,600 delegates from 108 countries of the world took part in the work of the congress, 600 of them - in a virtual format. The largest number of participants are representatives of European countries, 62%), as well as North America (18%), Asia (17%), Latin America and the Caribbean (2%), Africa (1%).
14 representatives from Ukraine took part in the work of the congress.
The Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work and Postgraduate Education, Professor of the Department of Internal Medicine No. 1 of PDMU, President of the Ukrainian Gastroenterological Association, Professor Ihor Skrypnyk took part in the congress and presented a poster report on the role of overweight and obesity in the pathogenesis of drug-induced liver lesions in patients with acute myeloid leukemia when using chemotherapeutic agents.
The congress approved a new nomenclature for the most common disease - non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which leading scientists proposed to replace with steatotic liver disease. Focused attention on the further implementation of non-invasive diagnostic tests in the examination of patients with liver diseases.
The participants of the congress got acquainted with the modern achievements and development prospects of hepatology, attending plenary and sectional meetings, a postgraduate education course dedicated to NAFLD, poster sessions, symposia of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. Doctors were very interested in the master classes held in practical skills training centers, which were devoted to abdominal sonography using ultrasound simulators, variceal bleeding and hemodynamics of the liver, analysis of clinical cases.
In an interview with the BBC, Professor Ihor Skrypnyk noted the strong support of Ukrainian gastroenterologists from international professional organizations - EASL and UEG. It is thanks to the support of the heads of these organizations and the personal initiative of EASL General Secretary Thomas Berg and UEG President Helena Cortez-Pinto Ukrainian doctors can attend congresses in person, register for free and participate in congresses online, and support doctors from Ukraine in organizing internships in gastroenterology in leading clinics in Europe.
